Many things can be considered art. Art in general has many forms. One of them is visual art. As the name suggests, visual art is art that can be appreciated through vision. It may be in the form of paintings, sculptures and others. Visual art need not be big. They can be seen in our daily environment. They may be simple or complicated. Visual art follows certain principles. The principles of art that it follows are fairly simple to understand as well. Even if one is new to the terms in art, these principles can be easily understood.
One of the principles of art, specifically visual art is movement. As we know, movement is the path or action that one makes. In art, it is the path where the eyes are brought. Simply imagine a never ending curved road, the movement that your eyes make or the idea that you get by simply looking at the road is the movement. Next is unity. For an artwork to be considered as united, the elements should complement to each other. They should not look like they belong to different artworks. Next is harmony. Like unity, harmony is the sense of belongingness of the elements. For variety, an artwork should be able to appear interesting so a monotonous feel is not recommended. For balance and proportion, a visual artwork should appear stable or have a sense of equilibrium. It need not be symmetrical, but it should be balanced. Pattern or the rhythm of the piece of art should give an overall feeling. The repetition of bold lines, gracefulness of the curves, or the overall pattern will give a sort of boldness to the piece.
Visual art has to follow the principles of art like other forms of art. However, remember that what you may perceive as art may be totally different to other people. Art appreciation depends on the person so no matter what form an art may take, as long as the principles and elements are applies, a piece of art is a masterpiece.
