Many things can be considered art. Art in general has many forms. One of them is visual art. As the name suggests, visual art is art that can be appreciated through vision. It may be in the form of paintings, sculptures and others. Visual art need not be big. They can be seen in our daily environment. They may be simple or complicated. Visual art follows certain principles. The principles of art that it follows are fairly simple to understand as well. Even if one is new to the terms in art, these principles can be easily understood.

One of the principles of art, specifically visual art is movement. As we know, movement is the path or action that one makes. In art, it is the path where the eyes are brought. Simply imagine a never ending curved road, the movement that your eyes make or the idea that you get by simply looking at the road is the movement. Next is unity. For an artwork to be considered as united, the elements should complement to each other. They should not look like they belong to different artworks. Next is harmony. Like unity, harmony is the sense of belongingness of the elements. For variety, an artwork should be able to appear interesting so a monotonous feel is not recommended. For balance and proportion, a visual artwork should appear stable or have a sense of equilibrium. It need not be symmetrical, but it should be balanced. Pattern or the rhythm of the piece of art should give an overall feeling. The repetition of bold lines, gracefulness of the curves, or the overall pattern will give a sort of boldness to the piece.

Visual art has to follow the principles of art like other forms of art. However, remember that what you may perceive as art may be totally different to other people. Art appreciation depends on the person so no matter what form an art may take, as long as the principles and elements are applies, a piece of art is a masterpiece.

Art have many forms. As there are many ways where you can express your feelings, ideas, personality and so on, art exists in many aspects. Paintings, sculptures, and drawings are only some examples of the thing we call art. However, with the variety of things you can do with art, there are basic principles of art that one needs to understand and realize. If you are studying art or will try a form of it, you should at least understand the concepts of art.

As you may already know, there is no definite rule on how to create a piece of art. There are, however, principles of art that people consider when making their masterpiece. A basic element of art is color. An artist will clearly know how to mix colors to make a painting look happy or gloomy. Colors may bring the emotion needed in a piece of art. Another element is the balance of the overall product. Symmetry is not the issue here. A piece may be asymmetrical but have a sense of balance. Balance is about the lines, curves and the definition of each part of the artwork. Another basic principle is brightness and contrast. These factors will bring out certain aspects of the piece of art or it can make a person focus on an area.

If you are a beginner when it comes to art, remember to trust your instinct and judge a piece depending on your taste. A piece of artwork can be seen and perceived differently by people. Many factors will contribute to their judgment. Because of that, some people may disagree if you say an ice of artwork is beautiful.

Principles of art are broad. It will depend on what kind of art to define this strictly. However, no matter what, remember that art is a form of expression. It can take many forms and it is relative.

When somebody says “Art”, you would be surprised that some people would be frightened by it. They might think that others would sense that they are missing something when diving into this world of perception. A lot of people actually do not understand words that are used to discuss and describe art but are afraid to be laughed at. Some also find that the instructions to avoid interpretation are very challenging. The principles of art are perceived differently by other people and many find that the modern world spend too much time teaching the youth to avoid revealing any emotions.

In this sense, artists are in their own special category much like scientists. They would then tend to exist in a world, which is devoid of any ordinary mortal and are permitted to have a license to be different. Anxiety may be rampant about them since they tend to perceive or interpret the real world in surreal or unusual ways. The principles of art have a way of producing an impact on how the artist would feel about an issue and cannot be expressed to the public in the normal way. An element is captured which no one can exactly get a grip with when a painting, sculpture, story or poem is created. Principles of art have been frequently used in propagandas as proven by the Nazis. Art pleases. That alone is certain. It may not make any apparent sense to a viewer but art has the ability to make us feel safe when gentle objects are hung on our walls. Art that challenges may be uncomfortable to some. Yet art is so much more than the great masterpieces of artists.

A simple building may bring about a discussion about whether it is great, elegant, pretty, efficient or absurd. The different principles of art exist because we humans have different beliefs in what is ‘right’ in our world.
